While anyone else was playing this game...did they feel a sense of sadness about halfway through?

Yes I did, but it was almost during the whole game, especially after Angeal left. It's not a joyful story and we already know the end before playing it. We know that Sephiroth will become crazy and Zack will die.
But I wanted to play it to know the whole story.

Absolutely, actually, the entire game kind of gave me a feeling of sadness.  Zack Fair was a great person, and, knowing his fate, you had to play through what he experienced before his untimely end.  It was beautifully made, and the settings, design, and voice portrayal were all suitable for the game.
