there are always two sides to a fight, Final Fantasy VII is a Masterpeace. Story wise, gameplay wise (at the time). most people love the game to much and they talk about it way to much, thats how something becomes overrated. I would still rate the game a 5 star game, For the story alone. But for all the spin offs, its pulled the story to long.

I agree with Holyland. The game itself isnt overrated, it is the fans who made it overrated. And i say let them!! What is wrong with loving a FF Game!!

I suppose it is all opinion, but it was the first polygonal FF which was a huge step forward. I for one loved the game and without a doubt Crisis Core helped fill in the blanks and did it quite well. The story itself was very odd but at the same time very deep. The game also had lots of extra bosses and the characters were well drawn out. Looking back, the game today can be considered very over hyped... I believe tites such as IX and X deserve a little more credit.

Final Fantasy 7 is a good FF game in my books but way overrated . Its good that square is trying milking the series and bringing prequels and stuff for but they should realize that they need to focus mor eon the upcomming ff series and not on remakes.

(ok, maybe it's too late to discuss it, but anyway...)

I like FFVII, the original story is well made, but there were too many additional games/movies etc. Crisis Core is a good introduction to the main FFVII, Advent Children is a good sequel but it would have been enough. And about other products (figures etc), it was overrated. We see them everywhere, unlike FFVI, FFVIII or FFIX.
It was also the first 3D game that came on PS1, that's also why many people know it.

And about the Kefka/Sephiroth debate, obviously, I prefer Kefka... but Sephiroth was a good final boss. Maybe his katana is a little bit too long, especially in Dissidia... but I think Sephiroth is too serious and a little bit too obsessed with his mum. Kefka is crazier and funnier.

FF VII will always be regarded as one of the greatest games of all time for me. Obviously there are many games that would also fit that context depending on who is asked. The whole game is completely drenched in nostalgia for me as at the time of its release, the playstation had made leaps and bounds in terms of game graphics and scope.

Before FF VII, i remember playing games like Streets of Rage, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World, etc. (Great games  Grin) These games could all be completed in a day or less if you wanted. Then along came FF VII...... the opening sequence alone was enough to completely rope me in but i'll never forget playing to the point of leaving Midgar, which seemed like a standard enough length of time to complete a game, and thinking "what the hell are these other discs for?"  And then BAMMMM!!.... i got a look at the world map and my jaw dropped.

For me it was the first game that completely took me into the characters and the story, and the disc technology of the playstation allowed the game to extend long enough to REALLY allow serious character development never seen before. I'd never take anything away from the later Final Fantasy's, but VII will always bring back great memories to me, and i'd imagine THAT'S why its so popular...... phew.

I personally thought it was a well-constructed game.  The music was very emotionally touching and set nearly perfect moods for the times they were played.  Though, Cloud is not very suitable to be called a "Hero," but, he was a character that people weren't supposed to relate to.  Unfortunately, I could relate, as I child I went through the same things as Cloud did, but put myself back on the right track.  As for Sephiroth, I admit, I am a fan.  But, I just like him because I believe his going insane and going on to attempt to destroy the world was the result of human error on Shin-Ra's part in the game.  I don't approve of the Kefka Vs Sephiroth arguements, either.  As for fangirls, yeah, I see a lot of fangirls that are just going gaga over a fictional character.  I hate people using references such as "Sephy-stalker" and such as the next sensible person.  Overall, the game is slightly overrated, but that's because there's a majority of fans trying desperately to support a game they like.  That is all.
