Yoshinori Kitase recently stated, in an interview with Ultimania magazine, in regards to the lack of a PS3 remake of FFVII: "It is very hard to make games on PlayStation 3 in the same style as the games in that era had. Making graphics will take enormous time."

This was also given as the explanation why the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII lacks towns, as well as certain other elements from older games in the series. As the game's director, Motomu Toriyama, explains, "Considering the amount of work to make graphics that deserve HD, it is hard to make towns in the conventional style. In the limited period of development time, to convey the great story that deserves the name of Final Fantasy, and to convey the battles that entertain players enough, we condensed each element."

Considering the sheer number of and amount of detail within FFVII's background files, I can see why Kitase would be concerned. FFVII is a visually rich game and was in development for several years; a remake could take a very long time to complete. Any extra development time also means a huge budget, and considering that remakes never sell as well as or better than the originals on which they're based, it wouldn't make much sense from a business perspective either.

Yea maybe it is true, that it would be a lot of work, in bussines way. But still it would be so epic to see it in HD graphics  Cry

FF13 Producer Explains Why FF7 Remake is Unlikely
John Funk posted on 5 February 2010 11:54 am

According to Final Fantasy XIII Producer Yoshinori Kitase, there are actual reasons why Final Fantasy VII hasn't been remade other than "because Square-Enix hates money."

Longtime readers of The Escapist may have noticed my fondness for lengthy recaps when news posts have important backstories, but in this case, the recap doesn't need to be lengthy at all: Obsessed Final Fantasy VII fanboys have been slavering for a modern remake for years, and despite teasing from Square-Enix, the official word is "No, it's not happening right now, stop asking."

But why isn't it happening? A remake of Final Fantasy VII would easily sell millions of copies worldwide, and the story, characters, and gameplay mechanics all already exist - does Square-Enix just hate the thought of millions of fanboy dollars flooding its coffers? In the latest issue of Ultimania, FF13 producer Yoshinori Kitase admitted that there were technical difficulties presenting themselves that made a remake unlikely.

Intriguingly enough, the FF7 info came to light in reference to the studio's newest game. In answering questions about the lack of traditional towns and the overall linearity of Final Fantasy XIII, the game's director Motomu Toriyama said that part of it was due to the difficulty of working in such a demanding graphical environment. "[A non-stop story] is one of the reasons, but more importantly, it is a result of considering HD graphics will be the mainstream. Considering the amount of work to make graphics that deserve HD, it is hard to make towns in the conventional style."

Kitase echoed those statements, saying that the same problem was one of the reasons Squeenix wasn't working on a remake of its groundbreaking PS1 title. "This issue is related to whether a Final Fantasy 7 remake will happen or not. It is very hard to make games on PlayStation 3 in the same style as the games in that era had. Making graphics will take enormous time."

I'm not quite sure I buy it, seeing as how the studio did a decent job with the infamous 2006 tech demo - is he just saying that it would be too hard to render environments and graphics in modern technology, while still being faithful to the original game in a way that won't send the diehard fans into a frothing rage of "They changed it, now it sucks!"?

It would take work, and it would take time. I think they could make basic changes and re-render it to smooth out the characters in actual play and redo the cut scenes with FF7AV level graphics and it would be clean enough to justify a re-release in a reasonable amount of time.
Give it to the group that redid FF4; they proved themselves fairly capable on the DS redo.
Maybe they could redo the graphics at a more basic level and
 Shocked [blasphemy warning] Shocked
re-release for the Wii.
Lower expectation on graphical improvement so people wouldn't expect it to look like FF13, and open it up to a different demographic and player set (unless SE is still bound by an exclusivity agreement on FF7 to Sony).

Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase recently gave what appears to be the final word on the possibility of a FFVII remake during an interview with TechDigest. "If we were to recreate Final Fantasy VII with the same level of graphical detail as you see in Final Fantasy XIII, we'd imagine that that would take as much as three or four times longer than the three and a half years it has taken to put this Final Fantasy together," Kitase explained, "so it's looking pretty unrealistic!"

Those who call themselves a FFVII fan should be happy enough with the original version of FFVII :Smiley

Anway this just proves how much FFVII is overrated by the general public. When FFVIII gained a tech demo for the Ps2 there was definitely not such a huge commotion, I even wonder how many of you know FFVIII even had a tech demo for the Ps2 huh

I love the original game, but it would be nice if they remade it, at least to look like a sims game.  I havent tried to mod a sim myself, but there are vids on you tube where fans have recreated whole sections of the game on their own. I can understand why Square Enix  A team might be against attempting it though.

Yea, i mean, FFVII ACC looks awsome, so i think it would be possible, if they just planned it to do it. But there are other things on the agenda for now

I'm not saying it wouldn't be cool to see the characters in full HD, but the same goes for any FF they made. But I much rather see the development teams working on new FF's than remakes of the past.
