Is Square Enix Shutting Down Final Fantasy XI to Make Room for XIV?

Via VG247, GameGrep reports that "a top human resources employee" from Square Enix posted on their personal blog that the company would be shutting down Final Fantasy XI, the long-running massively multiplayer online iteration of the famed role-playing game series which has operated on the PlayStation 2 and PC since 2002, and on the Xbox 360 since 2005.

The reason? To clear room for Final Fantasy XIV, apparently. The words from the blog post, which has since been taken down, allegedly said "I think some amongst you will know, but FF11 started in 2002 … Well, this year it'll end and the stage will shift to FF14."

So it's time for FFXI fans to get their brooms, right? Well, no, actually.

His Imperial Hotness, Square Enix President and Chief Executive Officer Yoichi Wada, chose to address the talk in a way befitting a man of his office: he tweeted about it.

Kotaku reports that Wada said on his Twitter account that "There seems to be a rumor that FFXI is ending, but if that was done, we'd be in trouble." To emphasize his point, he followed it with a grimacing emoticon.

So while Square Enix may someday board up the servers which fun Final Fantasy XI, that day is not coming anytime soon. And for that, I'm sure many are relieved.

Yeah, they've said for a while that they hope people will run both; spend time in 14 for a few days, then flip back to 11 for a night or two.
Don't blame them; more subscription money that way.
I wonder if the control system will be comparable; keyboard only possibilities.

I might go back to 11 in the months leading up to 14 just to get back in the groove of MMORPGs.
