Final Fantasy XIV, previously codenamed Rapture (ラプチャー?), was first mentioned in August 2005, when Square Enix announced they had begun working on a new MMORPG, but neither confirmed nor denied that it was a sequel to Final Fantasy XI, or that it was Final Fantasy-related. Hiromichi Tanaka, producer of the MMORPG Final Fantasy XI, stated in April 2006 that developers are working to make Rapture a worldwide release.[8] He announced in February 2007 that the game was being developed for the Xbox 360 and for personal computers running the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. He also stated that it might be brought to the PlayStation 3 as well. Square Enix announced at GDC 2008 that the new MMO will indeed target the PlayStation 3 and Windows operating system, and hinted that the Mac and Linux clients are not out of question.  On June 2, 2009, at the Sony E3 Conference, Final Fantasy XIV was announced for the PlayStation 3 and Personal Computer through a trailer mixing pre-rendered CGI and actual in-game sequences running off of the Crystal Tools engine. The game will be produced by the same team working on Final Fantasy XI including Hiromichi Tanaka, and will be directed by Nobuaki Komoto. Akihiko Yoshida is the art director, and Nobuo Uematsu is composing the music. The game will have cross-platform servers between PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows, making all servers accessible from any country. The game will be beta tested for longer than the 4 months that Final Fantasy XI was. The PlayOnline system will not be used for the game.[5]

Might be going to try it out if I can pay for it in any way.

Though I think I'll be playing FFXIII more than FFXIV

Sounds good, but I gotta buy a PS3 first, cause I'm still on the old Ps2.

Some News concerning FFXIV circulating on the web mostly are from the weekly Famitsu magazine Cheesy
FFXIV's story will take place in Eorzea a region in the world of Vana'diel, they revealed so far three of the big cities in Eorzea:
 Gridani the forest city

Uldaha the desert city

and Rimsa Rominsa the city of the seas

Concerning the characters, the races are similar to those in FFXI the nomenclature just differs

The humans are called Hyurans; Galkas are called Roegadyn ; the Tarutarus are Lalafells but always as adorable and cute as usual Cheesy; Elves are Elzen ; and the Migo'tes creatures that do look like Mirthas from FFXI.

The most interesting part of the news are about character growth, appearently there will be no EXP experience points or level system. The Battle system is called Armory System and will enable you to change the job depending on the equipements you have on. That way, even playing in solo would be easier, knowing that you have the ability to use a black mage just by equiping a sceptre during the battle when it's needed, or a white mage when you need urgent healing . It kind of reminded me of FFX2's Grid system.  The character's growth depends on the weapon equiped, their abilities will evolve according to the weapons that are used and to the categories of jobs they are related to.

Well Best news about FFXIV is that Sir Nobuo Uematsu will compose the entire soundtrack for FFXIV as he confirmed in this Wired.com article: “With some previous Final Fantasy games, I was so busy that I had to share duties with other composers, but this time, I’m composing it all myself,” he says. “To control the entire soundtrack, that’s easier in some ways.”  Sir Uematsu will be working on two more SE projects that will be unveiled later on.

Hmm. That's got me kind of nervous.

Uematsu composing everything himself?
That's got me dancing with joy.

Have to say now that I have finally left FFXI I will not "play" 14. I will get like the other games and will go on it if there is free something. But as to another day to day mmo in my life 11 was the first and the last I will ever do.
